You should know about your uninsured motorists coverage (UM) and underinsured motorists (UIM) coverage.

UM coverage covers you in the event that the person who injures you has no insurance. UIM covers you in the event that the person who hits your vehicle does not have as much insurance as you have. Your own insurance will make up the difference between the negligent driver’s insurance coverage and your own.

Insurance carriers are required to offer UM and UIM by statute because it is not profitable for them and they would not do so in a free market. For both UM and UIM, it behooves you, the insured, to read your insurance policy, talk to your insurance agent. Find out what coverage you have and what it might cost to increase that insurance.
